Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Scientist to work in the group of Professor Mike Bevan at the John Innes Centre (JIC) in a project studying the influence of polyploidy on epigenetic changes in hexaploid wheat genomes. The project builds on improved wheat genome assemblies and technical progress in mapping epigenetic marks on the wheat genome. The collaborative project is funded by the BBSRC through the ERA-CAPS project for three years.
The successful candidate will join a research team at the JIC that is part of an international network of 3 other labs with expertise in wheat genomics. We aim to identify epigenetic marks in the hexaploid wheat genome and relate these to gene expression and the formation and destruction of new genes. The Bevan lab will focus on assessing how epigenetic marks and modifications are imposed in newly- formed hybrids, and how epigenetic changes contribute to genome instability and new patterns of gene expression. Candidates with a special interest in developing bioinformatics approaches for integrating genome- wide information are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will have excellent genome bioinformatics skills and an interest in polyploidy, wheat genomics and the development of new traits during domestication. Previous experience of working in large and complex genomes would be advantageous.
The John Innes Centre is a world-class Institute and is looking to appoint an exceptional candidate who has, or expects to soon receive, a PhD in plant genetics, or a related discipline, with established skills in genome bioinformatics. We will be providing the job- holder with opportunities to develop their technical and transferable skills during this assignment, by way of training programmes, coaching and mentoring.
Salary on appointment will be within the range £30,500 to £37,500 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This post is for a contract of 36 months.
