Postdoctoral position in Malaria Cell Biology : Okinawa, Japan
Position summary:
The Structural Cellular Biology Unit (https://groups.oist.jp/scbu) at OIST invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in the group. As a group we have two main foci, cryo-Electron Tomography (cryo-ET) of biological specimens and software development for 3D reconstruction of tomographic data.
We are now growing as a group and are therefore searching for a Postdoc to further expand the biological/experimental aspects of our work.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will primarily focus on structural studies on proteins and complexes in Plasmodium falciparum infected Erythrocytes using cryo-ET and cryo-CLEM, but may partly also pursue their own independent projects. We encourage applicants to express own ideas and projects they would be interested in. The candidate is expected to collaborate closely with an expert group in infectious diseases at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.
Qualifications
(Required)
PhD and prior experience in one or more of the following disciplines: Cell- or Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biophysics or closely related field.
Proficiency in written and spoken English, and capability to interact well with people from different disciplines.
Having at least one first name publication in an internationally recognized journal, an ability to work independently, and having a genuine interest in learning new techniques.
(Preferred)Experience in working with biochemistry and molecular biology related methods, e.g. cloning, western blots, PCR etc.
Experience in working with fluorescence microscopy.
Hands on experience on FEI cryo-TEM microscopes.

OIST EM facility
The two main microscopes we have to our disposal are a FEI Titan Krios 300 keV S/TEM and a FEI Talos Arctica S/TEM 200 keV equipped with a Volta phase plate. Both use direct electron detectors.
In addition, the OIST EM facility also houses a Titan eTEM, Jeol ARM200F, Vitrobot, high pressure freezer, cryo-microtome, serial blockface cryo-FIB/SEM, Teneo VS SEM, CorrSight, 100keV screening TEM and will be expanded further.
The research unit at Karolinska Institute have the laboratoty set for expressing proteins and handling of the Malaria infected cells.
Term
Full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. This contract may be extended up to 3 years.
