  Freie Universität Berlin, with funding from the Einstein Foundation, is seeking to employ: One research fellow.

  The research fellow will work within the framework of the Cluster of Excellence ‘Contestations of the Liberal Script (SCRIPTS).

  The Cluster of Excellence ‘Contestations of the Liberal Script’ (SCRIPTS) analyses the controversies surrounding the liberal order from a historical, global and comparative perspective. It involves inter-disciplinary collaboration across social sciences, law, history and area studies in Berlin; it develops collaboration with research institutions in all world regions; and it maintains cooperative ties with major political, cultural and social institutions.   The Cluster of Excellence includes the Freie Universität Berlin, the WZB Berlin Social Science Centre, the Humboldt University of Berlin, the Hertie School of Government, the Centre for East European and International Studies, the German Institute for Economic Research, the German Institute for Global and Area Studies, and The Leibniz Centre for Modern Oriental Studies.

  This position is linked to a three-year Einstein Visiting Fellowship held by Professor Andrew Hurrell. This aspect of the SCRIPTS programme is concerned with contestations in the making of modern global international society during the broad period of decolonization and of the emergence of what came to be call the Third World and Global South; with the way in which a wide range of liberal languages and liberal claims about global order emerged, evolved and came into conflict in this period, viewed both from the perspective of western states and those resisting western dominance, and embodied in intellectual visions, political movements and international institutional practices; and with on-going contestations over the nature of international and global order visible in the international relations of developing and emerging states in the post-colonial world, and over possible 21st century alternative futures, liberal and non-liberal.

  Job description:

  Tasks

  Developing the own research project that must fall within the broad field as described above and working with Professor Hurrell on a shared programme of work in this area, involving both the research fellow and one or more doctoral researchers.

  Exploring innovative research perspectives on contestations over international order that lie at the intersection of International Relations, Political Theory, and 20th Century Global History; relating these historical contestations to the typology of contestations and to the theoretical categories being developed in other parts of the Cluster; and collaborating actively with relevant units within the Cluster.

  Preparing content, planning and co-leading of two international workshops (one in 2021 and one in 2022) and contributing to other meetings of the Cluster, especially those linking Theory and History.

  Disseminating research results through publications and participating in workshops and conferences.

  Requirements:

  Doctoral degree in International Relations or in a closely related field

  Desirable:

  Excellent expertise in the broad research subject of the Cluster

  Academic training and proven research proficiency in the central theoretical and

  Methodological debates in the areas of global governance and the historical development of modern international society

  Knowledge of one or more regions of the Global South and of the historical development of relations between the West and non-West

  Experience of collaboration in, and/or coordination of, academic working groups; very good command of English

  A knowledge of German is not essential to this post but would be an advantage
