Research Associate in Natural Products Biosynthesis & Biosynthetic Engineering
Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work within the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB). The position is funded by BBSRC and is concerned with exploiting genomics and biosynthetic assembly line enzymology for discovery and optimisation of novel bioactive natural products.
The project aims to exploit the genome sequences of 30 Streptomyces bacteria for the discovery and optimisation of novel bioactive natural products (secondary metabolites) including polyketides, nonribosomal peptides and hybrid NRPS-PKS products. The biosynthesis of selected products, which possess promising bioactivity, will be explored using a combination of gene knockouts and in vitro characterization of biosynthetic enzymes. The mechanistic and structural knowledge of biosynthetic assembly-line enzymes will then be used to develop new strategies for re-programming biosynthetic pathways. Taking advantage of the tools and technologies from synthetic biology, it is envisaged that new bioengineering approaches can be developed to optimise yields and increase the structural diversity of natural product scaffolds, delivering focused libraries of key modified products with improved biological properties. The potential applications of the new natural products will be explored in collaboration with scientists at Syngenta, which will also provide the successful applicant with experience of working with industry.
You will join a large chemical biology group with diverse research interests and must hold a PhD, or have equivalent postdoctoral experience in biochemistry, enzymology molecular biology and microbiology which is relevant for exploring natural products biosynthesis and biosynthetic engineering. You should also hold a degree or (BSc, Masters or equivalent) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related Biological Science with relevant practical laboratory experience.
